If you live in Northern Virginia, and are having your home’s steel petroleum tank removed, what are you replacing it with?
Well, you have a couple of options – you could go with another steel petroleum tank – or you could consider a plastic petroleum tank. There are quite a few reasons these plastic tanks have been popular in Europe since the 1970’s, such as:
- The polyethylene (plastic) are double-wall petroleum storage tanks; the inside shell is plastic, the outside shell is galvanized-steel.
- Both shells are pressure-tested and liquid-tight.
- The polyethylene tanks do not rust.
- The outer shell is tough enough to withstand impact from outside and treated to withstand corrosion from aggressive salt air.
- There is also a leak-detection device that activates should either tank begin to leak.
- The tapping for the oil to leave the tank is up off the bottom so oil sludge won’t clog filters.
- These plastic tanks are easier to install.
- The Plastic tanks take up less square footage than the older 275 gallon steel petroleum tanks.
- These tanks could be connected to create larger storage solutions.
While the plastic double-walled tanks are more expensive, they will work better and for many years longer than the steel single-walled tanks.
