Septic Tank Flooding: How to diagnose and fix the issue

How to diagnose and fix the issue

Recently, the mid-Atlantic region has suffered from some horrendous rainfall caused by the various hurricanes emerging from the south. Whether you live in Warrenton VAFairfax, VA or Chantilly, Virginia the affects from the rainfall can be seen all around. Many homeowners who operate septic systems in NOVA (Northern Virginia) may experience flooding issues as a result of the increased rainfall. The staff at SES is committed to ensuring that you keep your septic tank system in working order, not only for your safety but the safety of others and the environment as well. That is why we have put together a useful article to help you diagnose whether or not the rainfall has affected your septic system and how to alleviate the problem.

Have the drains in your home been running slow? Do your drains seem to be backed up? Your first instinct may be to pump the septic tank system. This may even get rid of these issues for a couple days but as you will find out they will return. These issues are most commonly caused by a saturated and flooded drain field. You should consider having a skilled trained SES professional assess your system. to recommend what is best for your septic tank.

Backups and lack of draining occur during flooding when the water from the system has no room to flow freely out into the drainfield. The staff at SES suggests that you plug all drains and reduce the use of water in the home. First, make sure there are no leaks from fixtures in the home. Faucets that are left on even the slightest bit use water and over time this can add up. If possible, avoid running the laundry machine or dishwasher. Reducing your use of showers and baths will conserve water. Finally, direct all water from roof gutters away from the drainfield. If excess water is allowed into the drainfield the problems caused by flooding will continue.

After the field has been given a chance to dry you can resume regular water use and consumption. If the problem still persist DO NOT hesitate to contact the staff at SES or to schedule a time to have one our technicians diagnose your septic tank system issue.
