All sewage disposal systems require maintenance to effectively treat and dispose of wastewater. As of July 1, 2012, septic system maintenance is legally required in Loudoun County, VA. The Health Department notifies conventional system owners to schedule a septic system tank pump out every five years. Home and business owners who haven’t had a septic system pump out since then have until the July 1, 2017 deadline to schedule their septic inspection. Alternative on-site sewage disposal systems must have an annual inspection and a valid service agreement. Annual sewage system inspections must be completed by the anniversary date shown on the operation permit.
Routine tank pump outs are a critical step in helping to prevent premature failure of a system, along with controlling repair and replacement costs. Just like your car or truck, there are a host of maintenance and care items that will prevent system deterioration and limit performance disruption, detect impending malfunction, and enhance the healthy performance of whichever septic system you depend on every day.
The Loudoun County Ordinance Chapter 1067 - Ordinance to Regulate the Establishment, Operation, and Maintenance of Alternative On-site Sewage Disposal Systems established requirements for operation, maintenance, and inspection of these alternative septic systems. Effective November, 2008, “civil penalties or tickets may now be issued to owners who do not stay in compliance with the new requirements. Penalties start at $100, with additional $150 penalties every 10 days the owner remains out of compliance up to $3,000”.
