Quick Tips To Keep Your Loudoun County, VA Septic System Working Properly

Northern Virginia homeowners with septic systems must use caution to ensure it functions as intended. Homeowners accustomed to life without a septic system may never think about what is put down the drain, or even through the garbage disposal. These easy tips will keep your septic system - especially your septic tank - working problem free.

  • Keep bleach out of the septic system. Using toilet cleaners, and any other type of cleaners with bleach, are likely to lead to high concentrations of the chemical that will kill necessary bacteria to keep the septic tank working efficiently.
  • Motor oil, paint, paint thinner, gasoline and pesticides should never be introduced into the septic system. Again, bacteria and other microorganisms are necessary for the well-being of Loudoun County, VA septic tanks and these substances will kill them.
  • Cooking oil, grease and coffee grounds should not be put down the drain – even through a garbage disposal. The grease and solids build-up in the septic tank and can cause back-ups in the drain field.
  • Feminine hygiene products should not be flushed, as these materials often will not decompose and cause a back-up in the septic system.
  • When washing laundry, space loads throughout the week rather than “catching-up” all in one day. The extra water introduced into the septic system can cause overload and cause a back up.
  • Never drive or park a vehicle over the septic tank or drain field. The weight may cause damage to the septic tank or even result in opening the septic tank up and causing quite a smelly mess and costly repairs.
